# Reported issues for adeu

Pod holds 7 of 7 problems reported by people outside the maintainer team. Issues filed by the project's own owners, members and collaborators are excluded entirely — a maintainer's release checklist is not a warning to a prospective user.

### Optional clause-validation hook for jurisdiction-aware redlines

The README frames redlining around catching formatting and structural errors. The next gap, often the one a lawyer cares about most when reviewing AI-proposed edits, is whether each proposed clause is legally sound in the governing jurisdiction. Example flags:

* This indemnification clause conflicts with `Cal. Civ. Code § 2778`.
* This non-compete is unenforceable in California under `Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 16600`.
* This jury-trial waiver fails under FRCP 38 in federal court.

### mcp-server@1.11.2 crashes on startup: imports _extractTextFromDoc from @adeu/core but allows incompatible ^1.0.0 core

## Summary

`@adeu/mcp-server@1.11.2` crashes on startup with a `SyntaxError` because it imports `_extractTextFromDoc` from `@adeu/core`, but its declared dependency range is `"@adeu/core": "^1.0.0"`. That range happily resolves older 1.x cores that do not export `_extractTextFromDoc` (the symbol is internal/underscore-prefixed in those versions). When that happens the ESM import fails at load time, and MCP clients surface it only as `MCP error -32000: Connection closed`.

### Implement DSL-Driven Querying via `read_docx` Tool

#### **Category**: Performance Optimization / Tool Schema
#### **Target Component**: `@adeu/mcp-server`

#### **1. Problem Statement & Context**
Currently, to locate and modify terms, the agent must call `read_docx`, which serializes and returns the entire document Part text ($8.7$KB text payload on Turn 1).

This approach has two major inefficiencies:
1. **Token Bandwidth Waste**: Sending the full document text over multiple turns rapidly inflates conversation history costs ($>40,000$ tokens

### Malformed comments.xml when creating the comments part from scratch (+ smaller findings)

Hey team, thanks for building adeu, really useful tool. I have been using it via the MCP in a Claude Code session to redline and comment Word docs, and most of it worked well. I ran into a few things that tripped me up, so I wanted to share the feedback. One real bug below, plus some smaller findings.

## Bug: `process_document_batch` writes malformed `comments.xml` (undeclared `w14` namespace) when adding a comment to a document that has no existing comments

**Environment**
- `@adeu/mcp-server

### Implement tool scoping/filtering to prevent LLM "Tool Bleed"

**Title:** `feat(mcp): Implement namespace scoping or tags to prevent LLM tool bleed`

**Description:**
The `@adeu/mcp-server` exposes a wide variety of tools, including document editing (`read_docx`, `process_document_batch`) and integrations (like `search_and_fetch_emails`, `list_available_mailboxes`). During long agentic document-editing workflows, if the LLM gets confused or hits a blocker, it will sometimes "hallucinate" and start calling completely unrelated tools from its schema.

### feat(mcp): Add defensive parsing for stringified JSON in batch edit arrays

**Description:**
When using `process_document_batch` in agentic loops, certain LLMs (particularly Gemini 3.5 Flash) struggle with nested JSON arrays containing object unions. Instead of passing an array of objects, the model frequently falls back to "double-serialization," passing an array of stringified JSON objects.

**Current Behavior:**
The server crashes or rejects the payload with the following error:
```text
Error: Cannot create property '_applied_status' on string '{"type": "modify", "ta
